Illinois
Institute of Technology (IIT) is
- a private, Ph.D.-granting research university founded
in 1890
- ranked among the top 4 percent of national universities
by U.S. News and World Report (2007)
- a leader in education that focuses on technology and
engineering, and the application of those disciplines in
multiple areas;
offering programs in engineering, science, architecture,
psychology, design, industrial technology, technical communication,
business and law.
Campus Locations IIT consists of five campuses
located in the Chicago metropolitan area:
- Main Campus—just south of downtown Chicago in
the historic Bronzeville neighborhood
- Downtown Campus—Stuart School of Business and
Chicago-Kent College of Law, located in the West Loop
- Moffett Campus—in suburban Summit–Argo,
home of the National Center for Food Safety and Technology
- River North Campus—home of the Institute of Design,
in downtown Chicago
- Rice Campus—located in suburban Wheaton,
plus 40 corporate and public delivery sites and global
online delivery.
Student Body, Enrollment 6000+ students: 4,000
graduate, 2000+ undergraduate
- IIT undergraduates: 36% ranked among the top 10 percent
of their high school class. IIT students hail from nearly
each of the United States, and one-third are international
students.
- IIT’s graduate students are diverse, drawn to
the university’s 60 masters and Ph.D. programs.

Advanced degrees are offered through each of IIT’s
schools and include M.B.A., Master of Design, J.D., and doctoral
degrees, as well as a number of dual-degree programs. Additional
offerings include certificates, and courses for working professionals
and non-degree seekers. Numerous courses, and programs, are
offered online.

History
Established in 1890 as Armour Institute,
after Chicago meat packer and grain merchant Philip Danforth
Armour, IIT continues its original mission to be a leader
in technological and scientific advancements.
